The Catacombs Review 2023

On October 7th, we visited The Catacombs at St.Pascal located at 6143 W. Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL 60634. Tickets can be bought off their website; $13 for general admission and $20 for VIP/jump the line. This is a non-profit haunted house, and is run out of the school and church basement. All money raised will go to the school, funding better education for the youth of the community. All ages are welcomed, but they recommend 12 and up.

While in line waiting to go in, we met a few roamers in the halls. We got to talk with Cleatus when we arrived. He was looking for his moonshine, and thought he lost it outside. We think Cleatus had too much to drink again as he passed out after our interview with him. We got a chance to take photos with Three Face and Puddles kept the energy going in line. Don’t forget to say hi to Stitches! There’s also a live DJ playing in the gym while you wait.

Once in the haunt, a few groups at a time are sat in a black lit room for the introduction and precautions before going in. Then you get to choose if you’d like to walk through alone or with friends. There were many actors inside, waiting in places you’d least expect. They do a great job of using every space possible to have someone tucked in, ready to scare. I loved the great scenery throughout; like the butcher shop!

Occasionally throughout the haunt, there were little traps where the actors got to show off for a little bit! There is this one where it is pitch black. For the life of us, we couldn’t find a way out! Little did we know it was a trap, and Catacombs made us pay for it! The whole walk through takes about 15 minutes. A cool little effect the crew did is the Contamination room. Just before you head to the exit, they lock you in a room where mist sprays on you to clean you off just in case one of the monsters infected you.

Unlike most haunts, I noticed there was a ramp as well as a set of stairs at the end when leaving the haunt. A great place to visit if you’re looking to take someone who might not be able to handle too many stairs. The only stairs you need to use is a single set you go up and down twice of about 8-10 steps with a small landing and handrail.

We had a great time visiting The Catacombs this year! The Catacombs is the oldest haunted house in Illinois. Unlike other haunts, The Catacombs is an old school haunt. No big animatronics or props, they rely on their actors. With the way the haunt industry is changing, Catacombs is still around. There is a reason why they’ve been around for 40 plus years! They can still put on a fantastic show without fancy animatronics and just rely on their actors. Now they do have some cool rooms like the Contamination room but this haunt is mostly actor driven. All they need is a great crew to put on a wonderful show that is worth your money.
